JACKSON, Mo. -- Funeral for Amanda C. "Babe" Short of Jackson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. The Rev. David Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:30-8 p.m. today.

Short, 97, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born May 14, 1903, in Jackson, daughter of William and Rosia Siemers Illers. She and William "Harlan" Short were married Sept. 2, 1927. He died June 27, 1965.

Short was a graduate of Jackson High School and attended Southeast Missouri State University. She taught sixth grade at Jackson R-2 School District. In the late 1930s she and her husband established Mississippi Valley Printing Co. in Cape Girardeau.

She served 12 years on Jackson Public Library Board, and was a member when the library and city combined to build city hall. She received the Jackson Heritage Award in 1998.

Short was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and was instrumental in organizing its Junior Walther League, Concordia Guild, and Sunday School department. She organized the first area cancer drive and served as the first chairman. She was a member of Thursday Literary Club and DJ Chapter of PEO.

Survivors include four nieces, Helen Williams of Austin, Texas, Kathryn McLeod of El Paso, Texas, Shirley Cooper of Marble Hill, Mo., Dottie Ellis of Jackson; and a nephew, John Short of Jackson.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
