Arnold Jerome Kapfer, 97, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at the Missouri Veterans Home.
He was born Jan. 27, 1919, in Oran, Missouri, to Oswald and Margaret LeGrand Kapfer. He and Marcella Mary Glastetter were married June 3, 1946, at New Hamburg, Missouri. She died Dec. 7, 2015.
Arnold served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 11, 1939, to Dec. 23, 1945, earning the rank of boatswain’s mate first class. He served on the USS Wright stationed at Pearl Harbor, then later on the USS SC-692 in the Mediterranean.
After his discharge, he worked at Gladish-Walker Furniture Store in Cape Girardeau for 20 years until they closed, then was a self-employed carpet layer for 20 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Knights of Columbus Council 1111 and VFW Post 3838, all of Cape Girardeau.
Arnold was dearly loved and he will be missed greatly.
He is survived by three sons, David (Cathy) Kapfer, Daniel (Deborah) Kapfer and Donald Kapfer, all of Cape Girardeau; one daughter, Jane (John) Blattner of Cape Girardeau; five grandchildren, Heidi (Ryan) Sanders, Aaron (Erin Geiser) Kapfer, Rodger Blattner, Laura (Timothy) Schmitt and Nicholas (Jessica) Kapfer; five great-grandchildren, Emma and Nolan Sanders, Kyli and Adrien Kapfer and Caleb Schmitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers and four sisters.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau, with parish prayers at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary given by Knights of Columbus Council 1111.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday St. Mary’s Cathedral, with the Rev. Allan Saunders officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Cape Girardeau, with full military honors.
