Annie Dell Hess, 97, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at the Ratliff Care Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Dec. 20, 1920, in Starkville, Mississippi, the daughter of the late John David "J.D." and Annie Mae Savage Gaston.

She and John "Jack" Leroy Hess Jr. were married March 21, 1945, in New Orleans. He preceded her in death March 28, 2010.

Annie Dell graduated from Mississippi State University in 1943 in the school of education. She worked for the U.S. Army in the New Orleans payroll department during World War II. She also worked a few years in food services at Senior High School in Ponca City, Oklahoma. She and Jack moved to Ponca City after the war.

Annie Dell enjoyed working outside and watching the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox. Her true joy was being with her family, especially her grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Loving survivors include her son, Daryl K. Hess, and his wife, Marianne Orlando of Framingham, Massachusetts; daughter, Marilyn K. Curtis, and husband, Dalton "Rusty" B. Curtis Jr. of Cape Girardeau; granddaughter, Shannon K. Curtis Miller, and her husband, Mark W. Miller of Cape Girardeau; two great-grandsons, Paiton MacLeod Miller and Tysen Dalton Miller of Cape Girardeau; and brother, Herbert Gaston of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, a half brother, three sisters and her husband.

Friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral will follow at 11:30 a.m. Friday, with Pastor Mark Martin officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
