Amy Rushing

Amy Lewis Campbell Rushing passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at her home at The Wellington Assisted Living Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. At the time of her death she was surrounded by three generations of her family.

She was born in Carbondale, Ill., Nov. 15, 1913, daughter of George A. and Georgia A. Byrd Campbell. Since she was the first child born in the first hospital in Carbondale, Dr. Lewis, the founder of the hospital, requested she be named after his wife, Amy Lewis.

Amy was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather Ervin Sullivan; husband, William D. Rushing; a sister, Mary Isabelle Edgar Dickey; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Burrel F. and Loie A. Baker Rushing; and a great-grandchild, Jacqueline Wilson.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann (Edward R.) Williams of Salt Lake City; a son, John D. (Jo Ann) Rushing of Swansea, Ill.; grandchildren David (Wanda) Williams, Megan (Gary) Boles, Amy (Will) Wilson, Douglas Williams, John (Ji) Rushing Jr., Patrick (Jami) Rushing, and Andrew Rushing. Amy is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Amy graduated from Carbondale Township High School in 1931, and received a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University in 1935.

She married William D. Rushing Aug. 16, 1936, at her parents' home in Carbondale.

Amy worked at Carbondale National Bank, and later was a bookkeeper at Stotlar Lumber. She moved to Cape Girardeau in 1961, where her husband was a professor at Southeast Missouri State University. There she had a career as a social worker with the Missouri Department of Welfare, retiring in 1978.

In Cape Girardeau Amy was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, Southeast Missouri University Faculty Dames, Faculty Dames Stitchery Group and PEO. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at Saint Francis Medical Center, and was active in several bridge clubs.

After moving to Salt Lake City in 1999, Amy was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and PEO.

Memorial services were held Aug. 11, 2006, at The Wellington Assisted Living Center and at All Saints Church.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale.
