Alvin W. Kamp, 94, of Jackson passed away Saturday, April 7, 2012, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born March 8, 1918, at Tilsit, to William and Bertha Pensel Kamp. He and Rada Lou Miller Fronabarger were married Dec. 19, 1958.
Alvin was a graduate of Jackson High School and had the honor of being the first Eagle Scout in Jackson. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on Nov. 11, 1942, and attained the rank of sergeant. He served in China, India and Tinian Island in the Pacific as a mechanic on a B-29 Superfortress bomber. He was honorably discharged Dec. 10, 1945, receiving five bronze battle stars.
He was a projectionist at the former Palace Theatre and the former Jackson Drive-In Theatre. He worked 37 years as a machinist at the former Jackson Hosiery Plant and 11 years at the former Lenco Inc., now Lenco Electronics, retiring July 1, 1988.
Alvin had many hobbies including photography; lapidary, which is the art of grinding and polishing semiprecious stones; and traveling extensively worldwide. He was a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson and a charter member of the former Jackson Camera Club.
Loving survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rada Lou Kamp of Jackson; a daughter, Deborah (John) Clifton of Cape Girardeau; stepson, Lee Miller Fronabarger of Carbondale, Ill; two grandchildren, Scott (Katherine) Clifton of Naperville, Ill., Chris (Karla) Clifton of Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Morgan (Steve) Pacheco of Naperville, Anthony (Felicity) Clifton of Romford, U.K.; and a great-great-grandson, Lucas Pacheco.
Also surviving is a nephew, Rodney (Jan) Miller of Millersville; a niece, Greta (Bill) Myers of Willow Springs, Mo.; two great-nephews, Blaine (Ann Marie) Miller of Jackson, Branden (Karen) Miller of Franklin, Tenn; and three great-nieces, Celeste Myers of Jackson, Jessica Myers of Houston and Kirsten Myers of New York; and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Daniel Hale officiating. Interment will be at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association or First Baptist Church of Millersville.
