MOUNDS, Ill. -- Funeral for Alma Ethel Hand of Mounds will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge. The Rev. F.M. Speakman will officiate. Burial will be in Johnson Cemetery near Vienna.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. today.
Hand, 95, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at her home.
She was born Nov. 11, 1903, in Lewisberg, Ky., daughter of John Preston and Annie Gardner Milam. She and William Jesse Hand were married Oct. 18, 1929, in Detroit, Mich. He died Aug. 28, 1952.
Hand attended Western Kentucky Teachers College in Bowling Green, and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
She taught elementary grades in one-room schools in Logan and Johnson counties. She later moved to Pekin and taught third grade at McKinley School more than 20 years.
Hand moved to Mounds in 1980. She was a member of Mounds Baptist Church, Smiles Senior Citizens, Pulaski County Business and Professional Women's Club, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and Order of Eastern Star in Vienna.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty A. Hedger of Mounds; two brothers, John Bowden Milam of Central City, Ky., Eldon Wood Milam of Bowling Green; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by a son.
