Alice Marie Scheffer Harvell of Jackson, formerly of Charleston, Missouri, died peacefully surrounded by her family Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after a long battle with mantle cell lymphoma.

Alice was born June 27, 1961, in Sikeston, Missouri, to the late John and Rita Scheffer. Alice grew up in Charleston as part of a large loving family. She was an active member in St. Henry Catholic Church. In 1979 Alice graduated from Charleston High School.

In 1982 Alice married the love of her life, T.M. Harvell of Charleston. They settled in Arkansas for many years before returning to Charleston in 1994. Alice worked tirelessly raising three children, working full time, and going to school to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a math teacher. She graduated in 2004 with a bachelor of science in education. She was a math teacher at Charleston High School for many years. Alice then pursued an opportunity to become the principal of St. Henry Catholic School. During that time, she also earned her master of arts in educational leadership in 2013. Her determination and commitment to education for herself and others was an inspiration to many.

That same year, Alice was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma and fought a courageous, life-filled, determined battle for many years. Throughout her illness, she always displayed kindness, positivity, strength and an unwavering devotion to her family that will never be forgotten.

Alice is survived by her husband of 39 years, T.M. Harvell of Jackson. Also surviving are her son, Nathan (Kelly) Harvell of Wildwood, Missouri; daughters Jessica (Lan) Brandon of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Catherine (Ryan) Heaton of Jackson' grandchildren, Emme, Ayla, Lily and Clark Harvell, James Henry, John and Elizabeth Brandon, and Charlee and Eva Heaton; sisters, Ruth Ellen (Larry) Kollmeyer, Sue (Jim) Geraghty and Rosemary (Bill) Lund; brothers, Charles Scheffer and Stephen (Darlene) Scheffer; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews; and many family and friends.

In addition to her father and mother, Alice was preceded in death by her brothers, John Henry Scheffer Jr., Greg Scheffer, Francis Scheffer and Richard Scheffer; and her sisters, Mary Catherine Scheffer and Mary Rita Mashburn.

Parish prayers with rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Thursday at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The family will then receive friends from 4:30 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston. The Revs Glenn Eftink and David Dohogne will serve as celebrants. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it was Alice's wishes that donations be made to St. Henry Catholic Church and school or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She was certain that without her family, faith and the tireless work of scientists committed to the treatment and cure of her illness, she would not have had the full life she did for the past eight years.
