Alfred F. Pannier, 75, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Southeast Hospital.
He was born May 11, 1940 in Charleston, Missouri, to Alfred H. and Rubye Ellen Francis Pannier. He and Mary Frances Peters were married Dec. 20, 1959, at Bertrand, Missouri.
Al worked on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers for 38 years. Al was port captain and general manager for American Commercial Barge Line from 1975 to 1995. He was one of the youngest captains on the river throughout the early years of his career.
Al was a member of Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 639 since 1966 and a member of IOOF since 1958. He was a charter member and past president of Cairo Propeller Club, a member of United Commercial Travelers and Modern Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Pannier of Cape Girardeau; two sons, Darryl W. (Ellen) Pannier of Cape Girardeau and Darren L. (Sara) Pannier of Sedalia, Missouri; and five grandchildren, Garrett W. (Natalie) Pannier of Millersville, Chelsea K. Pannier of Columbia, Missouri, Kassidy M. Pannier of Cape Girardeau, Brice S. Pannier of Sedalia and Kiser M. Pannier of Sedalia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Laura L. Pannier on Oct. 24, 1961, and Darla M. Pannier on July 25, 1989.
Private graveside services will be held at IOOF Cemetery in Charleston, with the Rev. Bryan Schaefer officiating.
Memorial contributions may be given to Darla M. Pannier Scholarship Fund at Cape Girardeau Central High School or Darla M. Pannier Scholarship Fund at Central Methodist University.
