EAST PRAIRIE -- Funeral service for Alberta Burgess of East Prairie will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Shelby Funeral Chapel. The Rev. George White will officiate, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Burgess, 74, died Monday, May 18, 1992, at Missouri Delta Medical Center, following an extended illness.

She was born May 14, 1918, in East Prairie, daughter of William and May Futtrell Hayden. She married James Burgess Oct. 13, 1934, who died Dec. 15, 1985.

The couple owned and operated Burgess Grocery until 1979. She was a member of First Baptist Church of East Prairie.

Survivors include four daughters, Georgia Compton of Lake Orion, Mich., Lucy Vaughn and Crystal Poley of East Prairie, Sharmane Rosson of Charleston; a brother, Jack Hayden of Michigan; three sisters, Bessie Smithson of Cunningham, Ky., Zora Thomure and Eddie Ellis of East Prairie; nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, brother and four sisters.
