Zoo says it saved 15.5 million gallons of water in 2013

ST. LOUIS -- Officials at the St. Louis Zoo say they're saving millions of gallons of water, thanks to new automated controls and sustainability efforts.

The zoo says it saved 15.5 million gallons of water in 2013 compared with 2012. Much of that is the result of the Life Support System facility. Zoo officials say that through the facility, tap water is turned into salt water, ensuring a safe environment for animals at the Sea Lion Sound area. The area is home to California sea lions and harbor seals.

The process filters exhibit water, reclaims waste water and filters it again for reuse, saving about 11 million gallons of water annually. Other operational improvements last year saved the zoo an additional 4.5 million gallons.
