In honor of the United Nations International Day of Peace, residents are urged to mark the day with a moment of silence. In 2001, the U.N. General Assembly adopted resolution 55/282, declaring Sept. 21 as an annual day to be observed by the entire world. It is to be a day of cease-fire, peace and nonviolence. According to the Zonta Group of Cape Girardeau, this year the aim is to inspire more than 1 billion people to be involved in Day of Peace Activities worldwide. The Zonta Group urges area residents to join the world in observing a moment of silence at noon local time.
