The old and the new will be mixed at this year's Zonta Club Fashion Show, which will be Oct. 4 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center.
The theme for this, the 21st annual fashion show for the club, is "Back to the Future: A Century of Fashion," said Jane Daume, publicity chairman of the Zonta Club. Chairman of the event is Charlotte Lanpher. Dr. Janet Ruopp is president of the Zonta Club.
Clothes from participating stores will be the latest styles in sportswear, business attire, casual wear, evening and cocktail attire and furs. Interspersed with those will be fashions from the last century, including an authentic dress from early 1900s, plus costumes from the 1920s, '50s and '70s. There'll even be a glimpse into the future, Daume said.
The club hopes to gross $20,000 from the show, with much of that amount dedicated to the promotion of literacy in southeast Missouri, Daume said.
The Zonta Club has developed literacy packets distributed to parents through county health departments. The packets contain information about public libraries and educational agencies plus a new children's book.
The idea, said Daume, is to give parents information on the importance of reading to their children. At the same time, those parents who don't read well themselves may see why they should learn to read better, she said.
The majority of the packets are distributed in Cape Girardeau County, but Daume said in the past year the program has expanded into Scott, Bollinger and Stoddard counties.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a buffet dinner and cocktails, with the fashion show beginning at 7:15.
Tickets are $35 and include the meal and the show. For tickets call or fax Martha Kinney at (573) 339-7863.
