The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau is sponsoring a reading and literacy program for families and children called "Literacy: Key to Discovery."

During June, July and August, events are planned to stress the importance of reading.

The programs are free, but pre-registration is needed for each.

On June 20, a tour of KFVS-TV is planned for children age 10 and older. The tour will emphasize the importance of reading and writing as it relates to various aspects of television work. The tour is planned from 10 to 11 a.m.

On July 15, award-winning author Vicki Grove will speak about "Unlocking Treasures with the `Write' Key." She will speak at Southeast Missouri Hospital from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Grove will talk about how she became a writer and what it is like to be an author. Her books include "Good-Bye My Wishing Star," "Junglerama," "The Fastest Friend in the West," and "Rimwalkers."

On Aug. 10, children will visit the Southeast Missourian newspaper for a breakfast tour from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Third-graders and older students will get a look at the people and processes that come together to publish the newspaper every day.

On Aug. 19, Lynn Rubright will present "Mind Magic" at the Civic Center, 232 Broadway, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Rubright does storytelling and workshops which incorporate stories, music, movement, chant and mine. "Mind Magic" demonstrates how storytelling can be a springboard into literacy and is designed for the whole family. An ice cream social will follow.
