FREDERICKTOWN -- With most of the county races in Madison County uncontested, local attention focused Tuesday night on the races for sheriff, assessor and coroner. Turnout was described as heavy.

In the sheriff's race, six-year incumbent Verlon W. Young, a Democrat, defeated Republican challenger Gary L. Asher, 2,953 votes to 2,070.

Democrat Sue Smallen Harmon, who received the highest vote total of any candidate in the primary election three months ago continued that trend in winning the county assessor's race. She drubbed Republican standard-bearer Earl E. Ealick with 84 percent of the vote: 4,208 votes to 802. Harmon will succeed Elvin A. Sikes, a Republican, who is retiring after many years in the office.

In the election for coroner, Charles C. (Chris) Follis, a Democrat, defeated Republican E. Jay Hansmann, with 67 percent of the vote: 3,382 votes to 1,669.

In other races, incumbent state Rep. Jim Graham, a Republican, was unopposed, as were county commission candidates Don Myers and Willis DeSpain, both Democrats. Myers will represent the first district in the commission and DeSpain the second.

Also running unopposed were Democrats James D. Rauls and Douglas McFarland in their respective elections for public administrator and county surveyor.
