SCOTT CITY -- The proceedings of the Scott City Chamber of Commerce were interrupted Tuesday night for a special presentation honoring Chamber president Shirley Young.
Shortly after the meeting was opened, Young was interrupted by her husband, Lloyd Young, who read from a framed Missouri State Senate resolution. The resolution, sponsored by Sen. Peter Kinder, recognized Shirley Young for 41 years of "unparalleled service" to the Scott City community.
Kinder, who was unable to attend the presentation Tuesday night, said later, "Every vibrant small town needs superb civic minded leadership. To my mind, Shirley Young personifies that leadership for Scott City.
"I was happy to recognize Shirley and Lloyd in this fashion," Kinder said.
Among the many achievements detailed on the resolution were Young's service as the president of the Chamber, the vice-president of the Historical Preservation Commission, the vice-regent of the local DAR chapter, a board member of the RCGA and a member of numerous civic organizations.
Mentioned prominently in the resolution were Young's service as the first woman mayor of Scott City, from April 1989 to April 1992, her service on the city council and her receiving of the Adult Leadership Award from John Ashcroft in 1992.
The resolution calls Young "a remarkable example of community spirit and a lady who truly utilizes her leadership skills and organizational abilities to enhance the quality of life for the benefit of her fellow man." Young is, the resolution says, "a positive voice for her city."
Young, who was raised in Bollinger County, between Sedgewickeville and Patton, became a resident of Scott City in 1956 after marrying Lloyd.
The Youngs have two children: Rick Young of Fort Casper, Wyo., and Devon Young of St. Louis.
