"Twas a few days before Christmas and all through the town, children were peeking up street and down...
And Santa -- aided by generous donations from the community through the Toybox program -- didn't leave 'em hanging.
Nineteen volunteer Santas and their helpers took to the streets of Cape Girardeau Tuesday evening, delivering thousands of toys to local children.
Some of the Santas had been delivering toys for more than 15 years, some donned the red suit for the first time. All were greeted by the same grins of children whose faith in magic remained whole for another season.
Toybox, which marked its 25th year this year, is a joint effort ofte Cape girardeau Jaycees and the Southeast Missourian that brings toys and games to children in financially disadvantaged situations.
Thousands of dollars worth of toys were donated by civic clubs, church organizations, businesses and individuals.
Fifty more applications were received than last year, and some applications include more than one child per family.
Last year 1,400 children received gifts from Toybox.
Cash contributions may be mailed year-long to Toybox Trust, P.O. Box 4, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63702-0004.
