YELL LITERACY GRANTS ARE AWARDED IN CAPE GIRARDEAU

Literacy grants in Cape Girardeau, funded through this fall's YELL newspaper drive, were awarded this week.

Additional grants will be awarded in Jackson and Scott City. Grants are based on the total dollars raised in each city.

Cape Girardeau grants totalled $14,000. Half of that, $7,000, went to the Southeast Missourian newspaper to fund a portion of the newspaper's Newspaper in Education program. NIE offers newspapers to area teachers and students for use in their classrooms.

Other grants:

-- Cape Girardeau Public Library summer reading program, $2,200.

-- Salvation Army Alternative Education Center, $430.

-- Alma Schrader novels for fifth-graders program, $350.

-- Otahki Girl Scout Council literacy program, $500.

-- St. Mary Cathedral School accelerated reading computer-based program, $350.

-- Adult Basic Education computer, $500.

-- L.J. Schultz School reading fair, $500.

-- May Greene Elementary School early literacy groups for students in kindergarten, first and second grades, $700.

-- Clippard Elementary School Success in Reading program, $700.

-- Franklin Elementary School learning center supplies, $700.

-- Edward M. Spicer Tutorial Program, $70.
