A member of the Cape Girardeau City Council Monday complained that she's been followed, spied upon and harassed by a person she suspects is another council member.
Mary Wulfers read a prepared statement at Monday's council meeting telling of someone warning her that she is being watched and to be careful of who she socializes with.
She said the person has had her followed and has made harassing telephone calls that caused her to change her home phone number.
Wulfers refused to name the council member she suspected was responsible, but said she's been accused of participating in "illegal" meetings, presumably with other city officials.
"If someone on the council has a question of my conduct, why weren't those questions brought to me personally," she said.
Wulfers said she's never participated in any "illegal meetings" nor done anything illegal in "social settings."
After the meeting, she said the unnamed person also has "been spying on other council members."
She said that throughout the summer someone has repeatedly called at her home but refused to speak when the phone was answered. "It's like they're just checking to see if I'm there," Wulfers said.
"I didn't really think anything of it until my son commented the other day about all the mean people who keep calling our house."
Wulfers said she has changed her home phone number and had considered putting a "tracer" line on her business phone.
Mayor Gene Rhodes was the only council member to comment on the matter. He told Wulfers that he knew of no council member who was following or spying on anyone.
