Two brothers freed in missing teen case

ORANJESTAD, Aruba -- Two Surinamese brothers held in the disappearance of an Alabama teenager were freed Monday on the orders of a judge, but the 17-year-old son of a top justice official was ordered jailed for 60 more days. The justice official's son, Joran van der Sloot, and Surinamese brothers Deepak Kalpoe, 21, and Satish Kalpoe, 18, had been held since June 9 on suspicion of murder in the disappearance of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway of Alabama.

Mexican officials may have arrested cartel chief

MEXICO CITY -- A man believed to be the leader of Mexico's top drug cartel was arrested in a shopping mall and police were checking his DNA and fingerprints to confirm his identity, the president's spokesman said Monday. If confirmed, the detention of Vicente Carrillo Fuentes would be a major blow to the Juarez cartel, the only drug gang that hasn't had a top leader arrested amid a nationwide crackdown.

Saudi security forces kill top al-Qaida militant

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Saudi anti-terror forces killed the head of al-Qaida in Saudi Arabia in a 90-minute gunbattle after surrounding his hideout. The shoot-out Sunday in the eastern Rawdah district, an upscale neighborhood in the capital Riyadh, was the latest blow dealt to Osama bin Laden's group in Saudi Arabia. Moroccan Younis Mohammed Ibrahim al-Hayari was killed in a dawn raid by security forces in an area where suspected militants were hiding, an Interior Ministry official was quoted by Saudi Press Agency as saying. Three other suspects were arrested.

Former ruling party wins key race in Mexico

TOLUCA, Mexico -- Mexico's former ruling party added momentum for the upcoming presidential race with a crushing victory in the country's biggest state, according to results early Monday. With nearly all of the vote counted, the PRI's Enrique Pena Nieto had 47.6 percent of the vote to 24.8 percent for National Action's Ruben Mendoza and 24 percent for Yeidckol Polevnsky of Democratic Revolution.
