Report: Global poverty can be halved by 2015

UNITED NATIONS -- Global poverty can be cut in half by 2015 and eliminated by 2025 if the world's richest countries -- including the United States, Japan and Germany -- more than double aid to the poorest countries, development experts concluded in a report Monday. At stake is life or death for tens of millions of impoverished people, mainly in African and Asian countries, it said.

Doctors: 66-year-old mother, baby doing well

BUCHAREST, Romania -- A 66-year-old professor who writes children's books claims to have become the world's oldest woman to give birth, and doctors said Monday she and her day-old baby daughter were in good condition in intensive care. Doctors at the Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest said Adriana Iliescu became pregnant through in vitro fertilization using sperm and egg from anonymous donors.

Ukraine's Supreme Court rejects election repeals

KIEV, Ukraine -- The Supreme Court rejected an array of motions from defeated Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych on Monday. After a day of arguments, the court adjourned until Tuesday, leaving open the question of when former opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko might be inaugurated.

U.N. officials ban travel in part of tsunami-hit region

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia -- Security fears again threatened to hamper tsunami relief efforts Monday, with U.N. officials banning aid workers from traveling in parts of devastated Aceh province following reports that fighting had broken out between Indonesian government forces and insurgents.
