The Illinois State Police released the name of the victim of Tuesday's construction accident along Illinois Route 146. The victim was Zane A. Martin, 51, of Stonefort, Ill.
The state police said the investigation into the accident continues.
A construction worker was killed Tuesday afternoon when a structure collapsed at a construction site just west of where Illinois Highway 146 meets Highway 3, according to Illinois State Police.
Police spokeswoman Bridget Rice said the worker was killed in the collapse of a box culvert, but didn't identify the worker or construction company. Vehicles at the construction site had Jones Construction written on them.
Late Tuesday, Rice said the incident was still under investigation and she didn't know when the deceased's name would be released.
Cape Girardeau assistant fire chief Mark Hasheider said the department initiated a heavy rescue response, which included three engines and considerably more equipment then a standard fire call, when they were called to the scene of the collapse. "That contributed to our quick extrication of the victim," he said.
Hasheider said that initially they were told there were up to three people trapped. Hasheider said the victim was trapped under 2x4s, plywood and freshly poured concrete. Traffic on Route 146 was at one point backed up nearly to the Emerson Memorial Bridge.
