A family illness casts gloom any time of the year, but during the holidays, illness can be particularly grim for a family.
One woman who applied to Toy Box for her two children, a boy, 8, and girl, 4, said that mounting medical bills often mean children have to do without toys at Christmas.
"Me and my children have been faced with me having stage IV Hodgkin's Disease, and I am currently receiving chemotherapy," the woman wrote.
She requested Power Rangers toys for her son and baby dolls for her daughter.
Many families will face a bleak Christmas this year because of illness, job loss and poverty. Toy Box, sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Jaycees and the Southeast Missourian, can make the holidays brighter for underprivileged children.
Organizers are asking for donations to help meet children's Christmas requests.
New, unwrapped toys may be dropped off at Boatmen's Bank, Capital Bank, Commerce Bank, Coldwell Banker, Gulliver's Travels, Commerce Bank, Mercantile Bank, First National Bank, Chuck E. Cheese's, West Park Mall or the Southeast Missourian.
Donations may be sent to Toy Box Trust, P.O. Box 4, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63702-0004.
