A 90-day sentence was handed down this week for a woman who punched a police officer when he pulled her over for drunken driving in Cape Girardeau. Circuit Judge William Syler sentenced Mary M. Chalmers, 29, of Jackson Monday to 90 days in prison for misdemeanor assault of a law enforcement officer. She also received five years' probation for driving while intoxicated. A Cape Girardeau police officer pulled Chalmers over in March at William Street and Farrar Drive when he noticed her crossing the center line several times, according to a probable-cause statement. When the officer asked her to step out of her car, Chalmers, who had a blood-alcohol content level of 0.115 percent, swung a fist and punched the officer in the chin, the statement read.
