After enlisting the public's help in a search and rescue effort, a missing woman was found alive in Cape Girardeau County on Monday afternoon near the Diversion Channel.
The 22-year-old woman, taken to an area hospital for medical attention, was found on Highway 25 in Dutchtown.
Before she was found, the Scott County Sheriff's Department coordinated a search along County Road 223 outside Chaffee, Missouri. Other search parties were dispersed along the Diversion Channel. Searchers were out on foot and on 4-wheelers searching for the woman. A helicopter also was used.
The woman was found a little after 2 p.m. but a Southeast Missourian reporter on the scene said search crews were asked to continue searching for evidence until the searches were called off around 3 p.m.
Search efforts began as early as Sunday night, when officers were attempting to track the woman's cellphone.
The Cape Girardeau Fire Department and Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department assisted with the search.
No one with the Scott County Sheriff's Department was available to talk about the search and rescue efforts or the missing woman as of Monday afternoon. The circumstances around the woman's disappearance and how long she had been missing were not immediately clear.
