A Pocahontas woman remains hospitalized after her stepfather shot her before turning the gun on himself inside their residence just outside of Cape Girardeau city limits, investigators said.
Monday afternoon, emergency crews responded to a report of two gunshot victims at 281 Tecumseh Lane in Cape Girardeau County.
They arrived to find Kristina Bosco, 30, in the downstairs hallway of the residence, bleeding from two gunshot wounds, said Lt. David James, chief deputy of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department.
Her stepfather. 45-year-old Donnie R. Newell, was discovered dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators believe he shot his stepdaughter in an upstairs bedroom before taking his own life.
A bullet was recovered Tuesday, James said, and a small-caliber revolver believed to be the weapon used by Newell was found at the scene.
Bosco was wounded when a bullet passed through her hand, grazing her head, James said.
Though Bosco was able to communicate with emergency workers at the scene, she went into a coma after surgery at Saint Francis Medical Center, and no interviews have been conducted with her yet, he said.
Two other relatives were at home at the time but were in other parts of the residence and unable to shed light on why the shooting occurred, James said.
Bosco is expected to live, although her exact condition has not been released.
