A witness at the rest area where an Illinois fugitive crashed after a high-speed police chase said the man was traveling at over 100 miles per hour when he entered the rest area trying to evade the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Lashawn D. Good, 36, of East St. Louis, Ill., was hurt Sunday when he crashed his 1998 Buick into a tractor-trailer at a rest area along Interstate 55 in Cape Girardeau County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The crash happened just before 6 p.m. at a rest stop near mile marker 110.
Good was fleeing southbound from a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper when he barreled into the rest area, and the tractor-trailer, at high speed, the patrol reported.
He wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejected from his vehicle, said David Shaw, who was at the rest area when the wreck occurred.
"I saw the guy rolling on the ground and a troop came up to try to take care of him," Shaw said.
Good came into the rest area's parking lot at 103 mph, Shaw said. When Good hit the tractor-trailer, he knocked the vehicle's driver out of his in-cabin bed.
Good was wanted in Illinois on felony charges, the patrol reported. His hospital condition was not available.
