SCOTT CITY -- A light display again will highlight Scott City's Christmas Celebration in the Park.

"The popularity of drive-through Christmas light displays is apparent with the traffic volume in Sikeston, Cape Girardeau, and even our town of Scott City," said Phyllis Spinks, parks and recreation director here. She said the park display usually draws people from throughout the area.

This is the sixth consecutive year for the light display. The first official lighting for this holiday season will be on the evening of Dec. 2

The park will be open for visitors and motorists every evening until Jan. 1. Hours will be 5-10 p.m.

"Come on, Scott City, this is a communitywide event," Spinks said. "We would like to see the park filled this year with your displays."

Spinks said churches, civic organizations, businesses, graduating classes and individuals are encouraged to develop a scene or decorate one of the trees in the park. Donations will be accepted to buy additional lights for displays.

"The dedication of your group is what will make this display a success," Spinks said. "This is an event that will bring holiday cheer to many people."

Spinks said more than half a dozen groups already have committed to the project. Decorating displays in the park will begin after Thanksgiving.

The Christmas light display is jointly sponsored by the parks and fire departments of Scott City. The parks department may be contacted for more information at 264-3411.
