The American Wind Symphony Orchestra has scheduled a return performance in Cape Girardeau for June 23 and 24.
The Pittsburgh-based orchestra, under the direction of Robert Austin Boudreau, is making its seventh tour and plans to perform while on board the Point Counterpoint II, which is a floating arts center and stage for the group.
Mini concerts throughout the area are planned when the orchestra arrives on June 23. The major riverfront concert has been scheduled for June 24. Last year they docked at the Themis Street floodgate.
The Point Counterpoint II has traveled about 400,000 miles since it was launched in 1976, but the orchestra was founded in 1957 by Boudreau.
Dan Cotner, the local chairman for the event, said the concerts are free to the public. He said he is coordinating housing for members of the orchestra and donations for their performance.
Cotner said a performance costs $15,000 and some local businesses have already contributed $1,000 each for the event.
People interested in contributing or housing a member of the orchestra can contact Cotner at 335-8533 or 335-6022.
