Southeast Missourian
The following potential candidates for the Eighth Congressional District seat were all identified by the Southeast Missourian or The Associated Press as people who stated interest in the seat or who have been mentioned by members of either party as a potential candidate to replace Rep. Jo Ann Emerson.
REPUBLICANS
State Sen. Jason Crowell
Crowell has represented Cape Girardeau in both the state House and Senate, and was prevented by term limits from running for re-election to the Senate in 2012.
Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder
Kinder, once a key potential Republican gubernatorial candidate, decided to seek a third term as lieutenant governor instead of trying to defeat Gov. Jay Nixon.
Sarah Steelman
Steelman is a former state treasurer who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate against Claire McCaskill in the last general election.
Lloyd Smith
Smith is the executive director of the state Republican party. He also has a long history with Emerson, having served as a staffer for her former husband Bill and in Jo Ann Emerson's office.
State Rep. Todd Richardson
Richardson, of Poplar Bluff, won election to the state House in 2010 after surviving a three-way primary. Last month he was elected to the redrawn 152nd District.
Cape Girardeau County Presiding Commissioner Clint Tracy
Tracy is a former member of the Missouri House who was elected to replace Gerald Jones as presiding commissioner in 2010.

State Rep. Kevin Engler
Engler was a state senator who made the jump to the House, winning election to represent Farmington and Perryville in the redrawn 116th District in November.
State Rep. Jason Smith
A representative from Salem, Mo., Smith was first elected to the Missouri House in 2005.
Cape Girardeau County Associate Circuit Judge Scott Lipke
Lipke represented Jackson in the state House starting in 2002. He served eight years before being term-limited out and winning election as a judge in 2010.
Bob Parker
A rancher and real estate investor from Raymondville, Mo., Parker unsuccessfully tried to unseat Emerson from the far right in the 2010 and 2012 primaries.
State Sen. Wayne Wallingford
Wallingford was elected as state senator in the new 27th Senate District in November. Before that he represented Cape Girardeau in the Missouri House.
Cape Girardeau County Sheriff John Jordan
Jordan, who is well-known in legislative and law enforcement circles around the state, was recently elected to a fifth term, but said earlier this year he didn't know if he'd run for sheriff again in four years.
DEMOCRATS
Jack Rushin
The Poplar Bluff chiropractor lost to Emerson last month, taking about 25 percent of the vote.
