Local leaders will meet Wednesday to discuss how juvenile offenders will be handled under a new Missouri Supreme Court ruling that changes custody rights for underage offenders.

New rules pertaining to how juveniles can be held are forthcoming, and affected officials like school superintendents and sheriffs have been invited to the meeting to discuss what programs can be set up to accommodate juveniles, chief juvenile officer Randy Rhodes said.

The new rules change who can be taken into custody and how long juveniles can be held before a hearing.

The meeting will take place at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
