Water Street will be closed between Independence and Broadway for about two weeks during construction on the city's lift station and force main project.

The project is the first stage of a plan being paid for by the $8.5 million sewer bond approved by voters last year.

Four new lift stations will replace the four existing stations along the Mississippi River, and a new force main will be built downstream from Lift Station No. 2.

Lift stations pump sewer water uphill. A force main is the pipe which carries water from the lift station to a point where the water can flow on its own.
