Voters will have a chance April 7 to enlarge the boundaries of Public Water Supply District No. 2 of Cape Girardeau County.
The district's attorney, Joe T. Buerkle of Jackson, said the circuit court of the county found March 3 that it was in the public interest to enlarge and adjust the district's boundaries. Buerkle said the district filed its application for enlargement with the court.
Buerkle said the district generally serves the Millersville area in the western part of the county. The election requires a two-thirds majority, he said.
No tax question will be involved, he said. Buerkle said it is not a question of whether the district's water mains should be enlarged or extended.
In order for the district to be able to reach those areas believed to be part of the Millersville-Burfordville community, he said, it is necessary to ensure that the area is within the district's boundary.
A recent study of the district's boundaries by its Board of Directors found that areas that were intended to be included in the district during its original organization were completely left out, he said. A number of the district's facilities were outside district boundary lines, said Buerkle. The facilities, he said, are water storage tanks and wells.
The district was formed in July 1965.
Buerkle said the board, in conjunction with the Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission, conducted a study and survey to determine how the situation might be corrected, as well as to plan for the district's orderly growth. The application to the court was an outgrowth of that effort, Buerkle said.
Buerkle said the board feels the area served by the district will no doubt be an area of growth.
The district serves an area surrounding the Millersville community from its two wells on Route B north of Millersville, he said. Its primary distribution, Buerkle said, includes an area east along Highway 72 to the Highway 34 intersection.
