JACKSON, Mo. -- Next month, a Bismarck, Mo., contractor will begin improvements designed to relieve the city's overloaded sewer system.
In a 12-minute meeting Monday night that may have set a record for swiftness, the Jackson Board of Aldermen approved a contract with Loana Contractors Inc. for $497,645 to fund the Williams Creek Interceptor Sewer (Reach A) Project. Loana's bid was the lowest of six that ranged up to $773,000.
The project will involve the installation of about 1 mile of 8-to-21-inch pipe stretching from the lift station on East Jackson Boulevard near Johannes Auto Sales to Old Cape Road and north to Bainbridge.
"It will provide some relief in an area that is basically overloaded," said Jim Roach, the city's public works director.
The improvements will take out one existing lift station and open up the area between Old Cape Road and Bainbridge to sewers.
The overload on the city's wastewater system infrequently has caused raw sewage to back up and spill, especially during a big rain, Roach said.
He said the project will begin after the first of the year and will take two or three months to complete, depending on the weather.
In other business, the board changed its January meetings to Jan. 2 because of the New Year's Day holiday, and to Jan. 16 because of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday.
