Wanted: waiters, waitresses for American Heart Association benefit
Some of Cape Girardeau's best known citizens will enjoy a healthy dinner to benefit the American Heart Association later this month. But they won't be eating it, they'll be serving it.
The Heart Association's annual Celebrity Waiter A La Heart is scheduled for May 29.
Chairperson Kathy Swan said the event last year raised about $13,000.
Some of those scheduled to be waiters are Neyland Clark, Rick Blattner, Don Zimmer, Jeff Krantz, Ted Williams, Dennis Marchi, Carol Keeler, Ed Thompson, Peter Kinder, Jim Limbaugh, Bob Neff, Dan Conrad, Sally Kerkorian, Rick Fehr, Dr. Charlie Pancoast, Chris Sheets, Pat Isaacs, Greg and Betsy Deimund and Dr. David Kaelin.
Each waiter is responsible for filling their table of 10.
The event has a movie theme, Swan said. Last year, some of the more popular themes were "Animal House" and "Grease."
Each waiter is tipped for more than just the service they give, she said.
"They tip for everything," she said. "Their plate, glass, drink, napkins, and silverware."
Waiters can also be creative with ways to raise money. They may sell flowers, golf lessons or sing.
"Anything he can do to get a tip, he will," she said.
Guests may also be asked to sing, and they'll have to pay the price if they decline. Those who want to ensure they won't have to sing can pay a fee to be permanently exempt from singing.
Reservations can still be made.
"We're still trying to fill some of the tables and we also could use another waiter or two," Swan said.
"It's very different than any other fund raiser that includes a banquet type setting," Swan said. "It's much more casual."
The cost is $30 per person and includes dinner, a silent auction and dance. For reservations or more information contact Swan at 335-5555. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Convention Center.
