Jaclyn Gail Smith of Cape Girardeau, a 20-year-old junior at Southeast Missouri State University, has been selected to participate in the Walt Disney World College Program in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
She will participate for the fall semester, which runs from Sept. 9 to Jan. 4. Smith is one of 2,700 students from across the United States and around the world selected for this work-study program.
Smith was one of six students selected for the fall semester from more than 200 college students attending the recruitment seminar at Southern Illinois University in March. Walt Disney World representatives were recruiting college students for both the summer and fall.
The Walt Disney World College Program is an educational, work and interpersonal relationship program designed to increase practical knowledge of the leisure industry. The program provides an opportunity for college student to learn firsthand from the leader of the industry, the Walt Disney Company, about the challenges presented by this business.
Smith has been selected as a merchandise hostess. In the merchandise division, students gain experience in retail sales and stocking procedures as sales hostesses at the hundreds of specialty shops throughout the resort.
An integral feature of the Walt Disney World College Program is participation in the Leisure Time Business Management Studies, a core of nonaccredited mandatory business seminars provided by the Disney University for 10 weeks.
Each weekly, three-hour seminar, communicates the philosophies and operating practices of the Walt Disney World Resort.
Upon the successful completion of the College Program, participants will be classified as Walt Disney World casual seasonal cast members and are available for employment in both hourly and professional positions.
Smith is the daughter of Mike and Gail Smith, 1940 Perryville Road, and is a 1989 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School.
