Former Cape Girardeau city manager W. Gale Lawley died Friday at age 79 in Dallas. Lawley was the second city manager of Cape Girardeau. He was hired officially July 1, 1970, and resigned effective February 1981 after a decade on the job. At the end of his tenure, Lawley was praised by city council members for his role in capital improvements for the city that included a police headquarters, two fire stations, the wastewater treatment plant on the south side of town and expanded city administration facilities. Lawley also served as city manager of Burlington, Iowa, and Camden, Ark.
