Voters in Cape Girardeau County's Public Water Supply District No. 5 voted yes on the proposed $750,000 revenue bond issue Tuesday.

The district, which serves about 200 customers, now has approval to issue the bonds to build a new supply well and to cover the associated operating costs of the new well.

The issue passed with over 56 percent of the vote, with 366 people voting to approve.

The district operates on the eastern side of Cape Girardeau County near Trail of Tears State Park.

The new well will provide the district with a backup source of water, since they only have one well.

Chris Koehler, who serves as the district's engineer, told the Southeast Missourian in October the proposed well will increase the capacity of the system in addition to providing a backup.

Once in effect, the utility charges paid by district customers would be used to retire the bonds.

Now approved, the well could be drilled and operational within a year, Koehler said.
