A proposal to expand the boundaries of Public Water Supply District No. 2 of Cape Girardeau County was defeated Tuesday.
The measure won a simple majority but not the necessary two-thirds majority needed for passage.
The vote was 173 for to 131 against, or 57 percent to 43 percent.
The district serves the Millersville area in the western part of the county.
A study of the district's boundaries by its board of directors had found that areas intended to be included in the district had been left out when the district was formed. A number of the district's water storage tanks and wells were found to be outside the district.
The district was formed in July 1965.
The district serves an area surrounding the Millersville community from its two wells on Route B north of Millersville.
