Vote possible on K.C. nuclear parts production

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City residents might be able to vote in November on whether they approve of nuclear components being built at a new plant.

The Kansas City Election Board said Tuesday that the petitioners gathered at least 4,342 valid signatures. They needed 3,572 signatures to get the issue on the ballot.

The group, KC Peace Planters, wants to prohibit production of nuclear weapons components at a plant being built for Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies They propose the company build products such as wind turbines.

The Kansas City Star reports that the city council can, within 60 days, adopt the group's proposal as it is written, which would end the need for an election. And some council members have suggested the ballot proposal might not be legal.
