A number of organizations that work with volunteers will be in attendance at a volunteer fair to be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Salvation Army facility, 701 Good Hope, in Cape Girardeau.

"We always need volunteers," said Kathy Denton, a representative of Area Wide United Way.

"We'll have a booth at the Volunteer Fair."

Denton added, "We'll be looking for volunteers for all kinds of jobs. The United Way really promotes volunteerism, and this is a good way to promote volunteerism."

The Volunteer Intergeneration Center, which recruits and refers volunteers throughout the area, will also have a booth at the fair.

The new center is partially funded by the Area Wide United Way and is a cooperative effort of the United Way and the Retired Seniors Volunteers Program.

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the fair, as a part of its Leadership Cape program.

In search of volunteers

"Invitations were sent to more than a dozen groups involved in volunteerism," said Jeff Glenn, of the Chamber.

"In attendance at the two-hour session will be members of the Leadership Cape group, Student Leadership Academy Kids, and the public."

Among groups who have indicated they will set up booths are the Girls Scouts, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and others.

"This is our first year to sponsor a volunteer fair," said Glenn.

"We're hoping for a good show to build on in future years."
