The teaching staff of the Cape Girardeau Vo-Tech Adult Learning Center recently attended a three-day workshop at the Sikeston Junior High School. The workshop was sponsored by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in cooperation with the Moberly Community Area College and Central Missouri State University. The teachers attended sessions on assessment, learning disabilities, and teaching of critical thinking skills. The teachers also will participate in a workshop next summer on the new GED Test to be release in Sept., 2001.
The Adult Basic Education teachers will be reopening their class sites for the new school year in the next few weeks. The Adult Learning Center opened for the 1999-2000 school year on July 19. The Adult Learning Center offers adults the opportunity to study for the GED Test or improve basic reading and math skills for employment tests. Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The class hours will be expanded in late August. The Adult Learning Center is air conditioned, computerized, and there is no charge for the class or textbooks. New students may enroll at any time.
Adults interested in the Adult Basic Education Program/GED are encouraged to stop by the Cape Girardeau Vo-Tech Learning Center, Room 113, and visit with the staff for more information or phone 334-3669. Adult Basic Education/GED classes will be available at Chaffee, Jackson, Perryville, and Meadow Heights in early September. In addition, there are satellite learning centers in Advance and Marble Hill.
The Advance FUTURES/ABE Center is open on Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to Noon. Afternoon hours are 12:30-3:30 p.m. Also students may chose to attend the two night classes on Monday and Thursday nights from 6-8:30 p.m. The Bollinger County Learning Centering Center located on Union Street will reopen for the 1999-2000 educational year in early August.
