The Village People will highlight Family Weekend '97 at Southeast Missouri State University next month.
Family Weekend is Oct. 3-5. This year's theme is "Hi...from Southeast."
The concert is scheduled for Oct. 4 and will follow the Southeast vs. Eastern Illinois University football game that begins at 5 p.m. in Houck Stadium. Concert admission is included in the price of a football ticket.
The Village People have been performing since the 1970s.
Famous for their costuming, each member of the group wears a different costume. They dress as a policeman, construction worker, cowboy, military officer, American Indian and a biker.
The group's best known songs are "YMCA," "Macho Man," and "In the Navy."
Family Weekend is an annual event designed to welcome students' families to the campus.
Family Weekend will get under way Oct. 3. Families can visit the University Museum and attend a session on international study opportunities for students.
Beginning at 4 p.m., families may register for Family Weekend at the Towers Complex entrance.
Towers and Greek cafeterias will be open for dinner Friday evening from 4:30 to 6:15 p.m. At 7 p.m. in the University Center Program Lounge, students and their families may catch the movie "Trois Hommes et un Couffin," the French version of "Three Men and a Baby," or participate in stargazing at Cherokee Park.
A full lineup of activities is planned for Oct. 4, beginning with registration from 9 a.m. to noon in the University Center lobby. During the morning, students and families may attend a session on the Missouri London Program, check out the "Visions of Science" exhibit in the University Museum, browse through Southeast student organization displays on Academic Terraces, enjoy entertainment on the Terraces and attend a Minority Family Weekend Open Forum in the University Center Missouriana-Indian rooms.
Southeast President Dr. Dale Nitzschke will officially welcome families at 10:30 a.m. in the University Center lobby and will congratulate the 1997 Honorary Parents of Family Weekend, Ronald and Debra Bone, parents of Southeast junior Laura Bone of Cadet, Mo. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.
A picnic lunch will be served from 11:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Academic Terraces, during which entertainer and juggler Bill Fry will perform his "Comedy in the Air" routine.
On Saturday afternoon, students and families may attend a poetry reading sponsored by Journey magazine, a Southeast families informational meeting on Academic Terraces, an open house in the residence halls and a presentation on study abroad opportunities in the University Center Private Dining Room.
An intercollegiate volleyball game is on tap at 4 p.m. in Houck Field House. Southeast will take on Tennessee State.
Saturday evening, students and families may enjoy the 12th annual "The Night the Stars Came Out" talent show, sponsored by Phi Beta Sigma and the Office of Minority Student Programs. The show is slated for 9 p.m. in Academic Auditorium and will feature Southeast students performing songs, dances, drama and poetry readings.
Also on Saturday, from 8-11 p.m., free tea and coffee will be available at a "Family Night at the Coffee House" in the third-floor lounge of Myers Hall. In addition, students and families may again participate in stargazing at Cherokee Park.
Family Weekend '97 will come to a close Oct. 5 with a "Breakfast with the President" scheduled for 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the University Center and a Catholic Campus Ministries Mass to be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Academic Terraces.
