The victim of a shooting Thursday night in the 1300 block of Village Lane in Cape Girardeau remained in stable condition Saturday, according to Capt. David James of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department.
Witnesses at the scene Thursday reported hearing several gunshots.
Neighbors heard someone calling for help in a nearby residence, kicked in the door and found a man inside, naked, with two gunshot wounds to his back and one to the back of his head, a witness said.
The victim was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center for surgery.
The hospital declined to release any information on the victim's condition Saturday, but James said the victim still was believed to be in stable condition.
As of Saturday, no one had been arrested in connection with the case.
James said more shots were fired than originally thought, with some hitting the victim in the back of the legs.
At the scene Thursday night, Sheriff John Jordan said two suspects fired what appeared to be a rifle into a residence, hitting the occupant.
A neighbor said two men ran from the area, their shirts pulled up to conceal their faces, got into a parked vehicle about 15 feet from the front door and fled.
A dark sport utility vehicle and a light-colored Ford Explorer left the scene and were seen traveling on Sprigg Street, Jordan said Thursday night.
Later that evening, police scanner traffic indicated the occupants of three vehicles fired more than 20 shots at each other in the 1300 block of North Spanish Street.
One of the vehicles mentioned was a white Ford Explorer. Police suspected the SUV might have been involved in the earlier shooting, scanner traffic indicated.
James said Saturday police now suspect the reports concerning the incident with the three vehicles may have been unfounded.
