PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. -- The victim of a Saturday morning shooting in Portageville has died.
The New Madrid County Sheriff's Department was called about a shooting at 5:50 a.m. Saturday at a residence in Point Pleasant, Mo. At the scene, officers found Carolyn Ellington with a gunshot wound to the head.
She was flown by air ambulance service to a Memphis, Tenn., hospital, where she died from her wounds, according to New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens.
A person was arrested at the scene and a gun recovered. Initially the man, whose name was not being released, was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. However, after the woman's death, the charges were dismissed and first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges were being filed. He is being held in the New Madrid County Jail.
