A man died after shots were fired Wednesday following an altercation inside Hardees restaurant at 2115 William St. in Cape Girardeau, police said.
Another man was taken into custody, said Cape Girardeau Police Department public-information officer Rick Schmidt.
Neither person was an employee of Hardees or had any association with the fast-food restaurant, Schmidt said.
The incident was reported at 10:39 a.m. We received a call that there had been a shooting, he said.
According to Schmidt, everything took place inside the building and Hardees employees were unharmed.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center for upper torso gunshot wounds, Schmidt said.
I can tell you that it was not an active shooter event; thats what everybody wants to know, he said. It was a dispute between two men, a handgun was drawn and shots were fired but it was no active shooter event.
Cape Girardeau County coroner Dennis Turner confirmed the victim died at 11:16 a.m. Wednesday. An autopsy is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
