The Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau recently recognized its more than 200 volunteers, who served over 24,000 hours in 2002.
John Sonderman, Gladys Lawrence, Margaret Kracke and Rupert Fiehler were named volunteers of the year for 2002.
Assistance by volunteers included delivering mail; operating the canteen and information desk; helping with outings and in-house activities, and giving ice and water to residents.
Volunteers trained in the Stephen Ministry visitation program made hundreds of personal visits.
From the time the Missouri Veterans Home opened in June 1990 through Dec. 31, 2002, volunteer have served 287,173 hours.
Volunteers are awarded a pin and a bar for each 100 hours. New bars are awarded as 100-hour milestones are reached.
Euil Trickey, home representative of the Masonic Service Association, and Barbara Yallaly home representative of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, surpassed 8,000 hours each in 2002. They both began volunteer work when the home opened.
VFW Ladies Auxiliary home representative Jewell Lincecum began volunteering at the home a few years ago and has acquired over 1,500 hours.
Volunteers providing 2,100 to 6,700 hours are Agnes Bendel, Vergie Templeton, Junior Birkman, Naomi McClard, Frieda Howard, Hal Scowden, Jim Tindall, Lillian Birkman, Harry Humphrey, James "Rex" Haynes, Shirley Welter and Betty G. Cato.
Volunteers providing 1,000 to 1,999 hours are Bob McLemore, Claude Estes, Al Mason, Jim Foster, Mildred Foster, Don Adams, John Sonderman, Lavern VanWeelden, Chester Herrington, Doyle Mouser, Jim Harnes, Jewell Lincecum, Gary Estes, Fern Schlimme, Ginger Beaudean, Gladys Lawrence, Lois Woodford, Fern Schultz, John "Doc" Yallaly, Glenneta Vogelsang, Dorothy Klein, Robert W. "Bob" Harper, Margaret Kracke and Rupert Fiehler.
Those providing 600 to 999 hours include Charles Schultz, Charlie Hutson, Betty Hahs, Neal Edwards, Ted Blattel, John Powers, Charlotte Hecht, Barbara Slinkard, Bill Hasler, Shirlie Porter, Jim Englehart, Ginny Jones, Norman Seabaugh, Betty Myer, Carlton "Cotton" Meyer and Paul Bell.
Volunteers providing 500 to 599 hours include Claire Campbell, Caryn Michel, Pamela Davis, Robert Eishenhower, Doris Meier, Brenda Turner, Marie Brantley, Eddie Schriner, Harold Nothdurft, Myrna Powers, Lawrence Meier and Bob Landgraf.
Volunteers providing 400 to 499 hours include Earl Statler, Myrtle Allen, Pete Rhodes, Verna Lee Nitsch, Walt Wildman, A.J. Seyer, Pat Renard and Millard Schlimme.
Those providing 300 to 399 volunteer hours include Clinton Gerler, Gladys Siebert, Carolyn Schreiner, Betty E. Cato, Dorothy Siebert, Melvin Eggiman, Bonnie Smith, Paul Harris, Bob Seabaugh, Violet Crain, Ruth Strack Hunze, Dora Mantel, Lee Flor and Steve Whitney.
Volunteers serving 200 to 299 hours include Louie Organ, Lavern Bangert, Marjorie Grandstaff, Dale Wolfenkoehler, Edna Sneathen, Naomi Lee, Bill Engleman, Albert Blattel, Linda Hutson, Evelyn Ritche, Harold Moore, Stan Popp, John Rice, Pat Rice, Mary Mouser and Hazel Clippard.
Volunteers providing 100 to 199 volunteer hours were Judy Moore, Leonard Adams, Ray Drury, Doyle Schwitz, Vernice Baumstark, Paul Beussink, David Crader, Bob Williams, Marsha Parrish, Buddy Parrish, Irene Tindall, Ron Bollinger, Stan Turner, Patsy Johnson, Harlan Siebert, Kacey Tucker, Nita Brazel, Katherine Stueve, Edna Wolfenkoehler, Kristi Meier, Iola Amalunke and Jeanette Niederkorn.
Five resident veterans are part of the volunteer corps. They serve as officers on the Resident Council, help with activity set-up, assist with spiritual services and various other ways. They are Bill Walker, Hugh LeDure, Horace Woods, Charles Clippard and Harold Henderson.
