The Missouri Veterans Home recognized nine people as volunteers of the year.

Those honored were Ginger Beaudean, Lillian Birkman, Naomi McClard, Fern Schlimme, Neal Edwards, James, "Rex" Haynes, Jim Harnes, Harry Humphrey and Jim Tindall.

Edwards was recognized for the hundreds of hours a year he puts in as chairman of the Veterans Day Memorial Benefit Golf Tournament.

This year's June 16 tournament is on a track that should put total net income at more than $60,000 for four years. Sponsorship donations to the tournament, unless otherwise designated, are placed in the perpetual trust fund.

Beaudean, Birkman, McClard, Schlimme, Haynes, Harnes and Tindall are regular weekly -- or more frequent -- volunteers doing work in the home.

Volunteers of the year are nominated by fellow volunteers with final selections made by the home's administrator and director of volunteer services.

Criteria considered for selection include volunteering at least 500 total hours with 100 hours in the past year, being congenial and cooperative, outstanding service over a long term or outstanding single service.

There are 224 registered individual volunteers working in the 150-bed, state-operated Missouri Veterans Home.Volunteers pass ice and water, deliver the mail, operate the canteen and information desk, assist with outings and in-house activities, make personal visits and help in many other ways.

Since the 1990 opening of the facility, 215,120 volunteer hours have been served through Dec. 31, 1999, with 24,186 hours served during 1999.
