A passenger van overturned on Interstate 57 in Southern Illinois Sunday, injuring eight of the nine people inside. A passenger van overturned on Interstate 57 in Southern Illinois Sunday, injuring eight of the nine people inside.

The van's driver, Sean Vortis, fell asleep at the wheel at 6:55 a.m. on southbound I-57 near the 23.3-mile marker. The van ran off the road and into the median, at which time Vortis overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The van overturned, ejecting six passengers.

Eight passengers suffered serious injuries and were taken by helicopter and ground ambulance to several area hospitals.

The Illinois State Police were still investigating the incident late Sunday evening.
