Southeast Missouri State University will induct 112 students into its Phi Eta Sigma Freshmen Honor Society chapter during a ceremony March 24.
The induction event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in Academic Auditorium. A banquet will follow in the University Center Ballroom.
Dr. Fred Janzow, coordinator of the Freshman Year Experience Program in the School of University Studies, will be the featured speaker.
Students invited to join Phi Eta Sigma must have earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average during their first semester or year of college.
This year more than 200 students were eligible to join the chapter, with 112 opting to be inducted.
"This is the largest group that ever has been eligible at Southeast," said Dr. Alice Strange, faculty adviser to the organization. "It really reflects that we are getting better students at the university."
Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society that honors high scholastic achievement during the first year of college and offers leadership and scholarship opportunities.
The organization was founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois. Today, the organization has more than 200 chapters nationwide. The Southeast Missouri State University chapter was founded in 1984.
