An Ice Cream Pig Out block party and the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce's Picnic in the Park will highlight opening week activities at Southeast Missouri State University.

The Student Activities Council will sponsor the free pig out at 7 p.m. Friday in the Student Recreation Center. Featured entertainer will be Tom DeLuca, who twice has been named College Entertainer of the Year by the thousands of colleges and universities that make up the National Association for Campus Activities.

DeLuca explores the imagination through hypnosis. He earned a master's degree in psychology from Sangamon State University. While working as a20therapist, he began appearing before local civic groups, where a businessman recognized his talent and encouraged him to become an entertainer.

Refining his act in nightclubs in the Midwest and developing it further at Chicago's Second City, DeLuca began performing on the college circuit, quickly establishing himself as one of the most unusual and popular performers.

On Saturday, the university will sponsor a block party on Normal Avenue. The local band, Papa Aborigine, will provide entertainment from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Greek community plans to sponsor free games and award prizes. Morrison's Hospitality Group, Domino's Pizza and Imo's Pizza also will be represented at booths.

On Sunday, the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its Picnic in the Park. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m. in Capaha Park. Local merchants plan to set up displays and prizes will be distributed.
